Introducing Joe Barfoot
I feel very privileged to be given the opportunity to join AIVA as a Soil Fertility Consultant, not just because of the range of products and knowledge available to me but also because of the people employed here. AIVA truly is a family business, something that is extremely important to me considering I have a young family myself. My journey down the regenerative Ag road began at Soil Fertility Services under the tutelage of George Hepburn and Nick Thorp, so coming here has been a reunion of sorts! Whilst I took a slightly different route, venturing off into the Horticultural sector for 7 years, joining AIVA does feel more like a homecoming rather than your generic “oh I’ve started a new job”. Primarily because of the warm welcome provided by the Harrington Family and AIVA Team, but also because there is such a great forward-thinking attitude in this company, driven by what can we provide to benefit the environment and our growers.
7 years in another sector (albeit one aligned with Agriculture) has been good to broaden my horizons and knowledge of plant nutrition, IPM then finally how nutrition can be implemented into a successful IPM strategy. Joining AIVA will allow me to again work in agriculture but the big drive for me is to bring AIVA into the horticulture and amenity sectors as there is a wealth of knowledge and unique products that these sectors would benefit from. AIVA implements a systems approach whereby we look at the whole system when facing a problem, so rather than just “solving” a problem we also look at what is causing this problem in the first place. Most of the issues I am brought in to help solve are usually just a symptom of a broader issue, solve the main issues and symptoms tend to go away this is generally achieved by an open-minded approach and working with our growers.
